Abstract

Over the past decades technical developments have highly influenced the field of interventional radiology. High-speed, sub-millimetric resolution has triggered increasing indications for cross-sectional imaging with highest diagnostic and thus therapeutic value. From the interventional point of view this results in two major effects. First, in angiography a shift in daily routine working from diagnostic to therapeutic procedures is evident. Second, CT is taking over many procedures, which were formerly performed using ultrasound or fluoroscopic guidance. However, due to its minimal-invasive nature, the cardinal benefit of interventional radiology is to speed up therapy with lower risks for the patients and shortened hospitalization.
