Abstract

Four wave frequency mixing in gases is now understood in a quantitative manner and has been used for the design of coherent infrared as well as vacuum uv sources. A brief review of the fundamental processes is given. The vacuum uv sources have already extended laser spectroscopy into the vacuum ultraviolet spectral region below 200 nm. Several examples of state selective spectroscopy of small molecules in the vacuum ultraviolet spectral region are presented.
