The wave nature of light is manifested by diffraction. Such problems are notoriously diffcult to solve. Here we indicate two approaches – the first, based on a variational principle, and the second, valid for short wavelengths, based on the exact solution found by Sommerfeld in 1896 for the diffraction by a straight edge.
