Abstract

Spins, electromagnetic moments and radii are basic observables characterizing a particular nucleus. We review a variety of experimental techniques currently used to measure these quantities for unstable nuclei far from stability and for isomeric nuclear states. The experiments can be traced back to two different principles: Optical high-resolution spectroscopy reveals the interaction between nuclear moments and the electromagnetic fields produced by the shell electrons. On the other hand, β- or γ-ray detection reveals the movement of nuclear spin systems in externally applied fields or hyperfine fields produced by a crystal lattice surrounding. The relevance of such measurements for nuclear structure research is discussed in connection with selected examples of results.
