Abstract

When processing color images in a luminance-chrominance color space, e.g., YUV or YIQ, it is usually necessary to convert to a primary color space, e.g., RGB, prior to displaying or printing. In some cases the resulting values of R, G, B will be outside the allowable range for the display. The conventional approach to solving this problem is to clip the offending primary color, which can result in color shifts or loss of contrast. In this paper, we attenuate the chrominance instead, resulting in no color shifts, maintenance of luminance and no loss of contrast.
