Abstract
Depositional systems consist of components showing different scales. These are the scales of bedforms, environments, and sedimentary basins. The deposition of sediments within these scales provides strata, sedimentary sequences, and stratigraphic units. These altogether are geological documents. They contain stratigraphical gaps which can be evident as visible erosion surfaces or can be hidden within the sedimentary sequence. The missing thickness of strata and the time gaps are difficult to specify. Yet, depositional records and gaps both are necessary to describe depositional models, both a modern geomorphic setting and an ancient rock record.
