Electron-positron pair production in compact sources with energetic protons

Abstract

Selected theoretical models of X-ray and γ-ray compact sources in which the available power is supplied to either thermal or nonthermal protons, and in which electron-positron pair production occurs are discussed. The pair production is due to electron and photon interactions in the ambient thermal electron plasma Coulomb-heated to a relativistic temperature and/or electromagnetic cascades initiated by decay of pions produced by energetic protons. The models assume either spherical or disk accretion onto a black hole or approximate the source as a one-zone region. The steady state pair abundance and instabilities related to pairs are discussed.
