Abstract
The title above is exactly the title of a monograph [9] published in 1994 by Gordon and Breach, London. The main aim of the present paper is to present recent notions and results not included in this monograph. One starts by introducing the basic definitions and the basic results of grammar system theory, then one surveys results related to the power of hybrid cooperating distributed (CD) grammar systems, to teams in CD grammar systems, to parallel communicating (PC) grammar systems with context-free and context-sensitive components. Other directions of research are also briefly mentioned, as well as a series of open problems.
