Abstract

ESA on-board software is mostly real-time and embedded, performing a variety of tasks to control and monitor the functioning of a satellite. Typically, it can be divided into the following categories:

  • On-board Data Handling (OBDH): mission critical, usually hard real-time, with both cyclic and sporadic activities, with different deadlines and priorities.

  • Attitude and Orbit Control Software (AOCS): mission critical, but is usually soft real-time. It is essentially cyclic software.

  • Payload software: It is (usually) not mission critical, and its real-time features depend very much on the specific case.
