Abstract
This chapter is devoted to a set of topics that arise repeatedly in developing quantum mechanics to the point where it can be applied to specific phenomena and systems. These basic tools should be at the disposal of the student as the need arises. Most readers will already be familiar with at least some of these, but we cannot know which. To maximize attention to the essence of the physics that will be treated in the remainder of this volume, we develop these tools ab initio here. Many readers will already know enough to skip this chapter to begin with, and may prefer to return to it should they find that their knowledge needs refreshment or elaboration.
