Abstract
Parathyroid scintigraphy has been used for localization of a parathyroid adenoma in the evaluation of hyperparathyroidism. Sestamibi-SPECT (single photon emission computed tomography) and computed tomography (CT) fusion has improved the localization of a parathyroid adenoma.1 In two of eight patients with ectopic thoracic adenoma studied with MIBI-SPECT/CT, the fused imaging was the only procedure to provide precise localization of the adenoma for the surgical planning.2An incremental value of hybrid SPECT/CT also was documented in all nine patients with hyperparathyroidism, with a major benefit in four patients with an ectopic parathyroid. In addition, SPECT/CT facilitated successful surgery, even in a minimally invasive approach, and excluded the need for further or additional imaging studies.3
