Genetics and Genomics of Rosaceae

Part of the book series: Plant Genetics and Genomics: Crops and Models ((PGG,volume 6))

The magnificent simplicity, or to some, the monotonous consistency, of the actiniomorphicflowers of the rose family has been recognized for millennia. The originof the name rose is summarized in the American Heritage Dictionary (2000):

A rose by any other name would smell as sweet.

Shakespeare

A rose is a rose is a rose.

Gertrude Stein

The Rose Family

The rose is a rose

And was always a rose;

But the theory now goes

That the apple’s a rose,

And the pear is, and so’s

The plum, I suppose.

The dear only knows

What will next prove a rose.

You, of course, are a rose,

But were always a rose.

Robert Frost
