Abstract

In comparative welfare state research, the Nordic countries have often been treated as a distinctive group. During the golden age of capitalism and into the 1980s, they were counted among the most developed and successful welfare states. However, in the 1990s these countries, and in particular Finland and Sweden, faced severe economic and social problems, and welfare arrangements were claimed to be a part of these problems. In this chapter, these developments are related to the new stage of globalization as well as to internal changes in these countries.
