Abstract

There are only a few large classes of naturally occurring compounds which possess high biological activity, and the discovery of a new family is an event of major significance to the biomedical community. It is against this background that one must view the discovery of prostaglandins by von Euler [1], Goldblatt [2], and Bergstrom and Sjövall [3]. The promise of these substances in therapeutics is already great [4], but perhaps greater is their significance in cell biology.
