Abstract

The question of what material is to be used for the manufacture of some particular component is often an extremely complex problem. There are very many factors which have to be considered, including

  1. (1)

    the shape and size of the component

  2. (2)

    the dimensional tolerances to be attained

  3. (3)

    the scale of production required

  4. (4)

    the physical and mechanical property requirements

  5. (5)

    cost and availability of materials

  6. (6)

    cost and availability of processing plant
