Abstract
Geriatric patients who have had a Chopart amputation are fitted with a high lacing boot which incorporates a posterior polypropylene shell, covered by the shank, and a rigid sole to resist dorsiflexion moments in late stance. This has the advantage of ease of application without the exertion of undue forces on the stump. Female, and sometimes geriatric, patients are alternatively fitted with a supple leather boot incorporating a polyurethane forefoot of an appropriate density to allow ‘roll over’ on the forefoot. This is a more cosmetic solution.
(Editorial note: The review presented by Professor van Rolleghem surveyed prosthetic practice in Belgium, with particular emphasis on that of the parent organisation CEBELOR. It was illustrated by some 60 slides and as such was not in a form directly suitable for publication. What follows is a précis emphasising significant aspects.)
