Abstract

Light energy travels outwards from its source, and a line showing its direction of travel is called a ray. When light from a bright source passes through a narrow slit in front of it, the light is easily seen where it falls on a surface, for exampleā€¯ a sheet of paper (Fig. 14.1). The bright line across the paper from the slit marks the path of the ray, which is a straight line.
