Abstract

The object of my book is to publish a selection of Edmund Blunden’s letters to Aki Hayashi together with a chronological narrative of their friendship and notes. The letters, which are so far unpublished, number more than 1400 in total and date from 1925 to 1962. When I first encountered these letters they were all in disarray; and my preparatory task seemed enormous as I had to put them in chronological order, transcribe them and have them typed.
