Abstract

Certain attributes of civil society are generally viewed either as important preconditions for the emergence of democracy or as positive elements in breeding a favourable environment for the long-run consolidation of democratic institutions. From earlier versions dealing with social preconditions of democracy (Lipset, 1963) and classical approaches such as that of polyarchy (Dahl, 1971), going through analyses of political development and modernization (Huntington, 1968, 1984), up until more recent works on the transition of authoritarian regimes (O’Donnell and Schmitter, 1986) and cross-country studies of structural factors in democratization, some space has been given to the role of certain social sectors, groups, and movements, or structural characteristics of civil society as a whole in favouring democratization.
