Abstract
The radical political, economic and social changes which took place in Central and Eastern Europe after the collapse of communism opened up new immigration channels to Italy. Most immigration from Central and Eastern Europe is econmically driven, while the flow of asylum seekers who can no longer be recognised after the liberalisation process begun in this region is gradually decreasing.
