Abstract
This chapter describes how the management of UK fisheries has developed into a system of sectoral quota management (SQM) over the past decade. The advantages and disadvantages of this particular management system are analysed. It is suggested that the future development of the SQM system could result in a system of individual transferable quotas (ITQs). Alternatively, it could also develop in the opposite direction, in terms of communal ownership of fish quotas by fish producer organizations (POs).
