Users and Roles

Abstract

WordPress has five built-in user roles with escalating permissions. The basic role and notification systems work well for many blogs, but they’re too limited for more complex content management. Fortunately, the developers have indicated that the roles will be overhauled in an upcoming version (perhaps 3.1). In the meantime, they can be modified if you’re willing to dig into some PHP or install a couple of plugins: you can change the fields in the basic user profile, modify roles, and create whole new roles. I’ll look at all the code (or plugin settings) required to make these changes.
