Abstract

The role of histopathology in the diagnosis of BPS/IC is primarily one of excluding other possible diagnoses. However, biopsy retrieval and histopathological examination may also be of value when it comes to diagnosing BPS/IC as specimens from classic IC, or BPS ESSIC type 3C, frequently display rather discriminative histopathological and immunohistochemical features. Various fixation and staining techniques are also discussed in the present chapter as well as the role of, and the immunohistochemical detection of, the mast cell in IC.

There has been emphasis on the possibility of a neurogenic nature of BPS/IC as well as theories that the condition may arise from autoimmune disturbances. These questions are also addressed herein.
