Abstract

Molecular biology is one of the most important and rapidly developing areas in the life sciences, and now forms the basis of subjects such as physiology, immunology and genetics. Cellular biology is the study of cells, which make up all living creatures, and which occupy an intermediate level of biological complexity between molecules and multicellular organisms. Mathematics has been applied in many areas of molecular and cellular biology; this chapter is concerned mainly with the kinetics of chemical processes in cells. These are involved in

  • metabolism and its control,

  • information gathering, interpretation, transmission, and replication,

  • defence against invading organisms,

  • transport of essential substances and destruction or removal of noxious ones, and

  • mechanical work,

although we shall not consider the last two of these.
