Oximetry in the Weaning of the Ventilator Patient

Pulse Oximetry

Abstract

Ear oximeters have been known for many years. The technology, however, was hampered by difficulties in calibration and errors due to the pigments present in the ear (Tait et al. 1966; Nilsson 1960; Wood et al. 1960). More recently compact, lightweight and accurate pulse oximeters (Biox II, Biox III or Nellcor) have become available.
