Abstract

In the recent decade a number of empirical studies (Cooley 1981, Finne 1982, Wingert 1984, Majchrzak 1987, Rasmussen 1987, 1989) indicate that the introduction of Computer Aided Design (CAD) systems may present problems in design activity similar to those experienced in some fields of skilled manual labour when subjected to technical change1: Example

  • a further division between creative and non-creative activities

  • a further intensification of work

  • an increased rate of design-knowledge obsolescence

  • a decrease in contact and fewer opportunities for informal, face-to-face communication.
