Abstract

Coronary heart disease (CHD) remains the leading cause of death in many countries. The fact that it may be declining in some areas (e.g. United States, Australia) allows no grounds for complacency. It is estimated that still more than 1.25 million Americans suffer a heart attack each year (Levy 1981), and in Scotland in 1977 the death rate from coronary disease was 800 per 100 000 population.
