Summary

Staphylococcal toxic shock syndrome toxin-1 (TSST-1) and streptococcal erythrogenic toxin A (ET A) exhibit potent immunoregulatory properties in addition to their lethal and toxic effects. Both toxins induced the production of high amounts of interleukin 1 and 2, tumor necrosis factor alpha, and interferon gamma. TSST-1 was also shown to induce the release of tumor necrosis factor beta and that of the hemopoietic growth factors: interleukin 3, M-CSF and GM-CSF.
