Abstract
Very little information is available (and usually nothing at all) in surgical textbooks or other literature concerning simple remedial therapies for the prevention and relief of haemorrhoids. Nor is instruction in their use given to medical students or surgeons in training; one has to assume that colo-proctologists attach little importance to this aspect of haemorrhoid treatment, despite the vast array of “over-the-counter” remedies and the frequency with which the public resorts to them. This attitude needs correction and unless colo-proctologists include these preparations in their practise, they will continue to lose an important part of management to mountebanks and practitioners of “alternative medicine”.
