Abstract
In this chapter, we discuss design competence which not only underlies the concept generation deep in the mind but also drives it. Design competence is defined as that which contains the basis and ability of the concept generation for design creativity. Design competence is categorized into three types: competence to inspire the motivation from inside a thought space, competence to abstract the concepts, and competence to control the back-and-forth issue. The former two competences are related to space issues—that is, the first one is a horizontal issue and the second, a vertical issue—whereas the latter competence is related to the issue of time.
