Abstract

Neuromuscular blocking drugs (also called muscle relaxants by anesthesiologists) are mainly used as adjuvants to surgical anesthesia (Miller and Savarese, 1981; Taylor, 1985). Once patients have been rendered insensate with an appropriate anesthetic(s), neuromuscular blocking agents provide the skeletal muscle relaxation that is needed for surgical procedures. Furthermore, in combination with an anesthetic, neuromuscular blockade is useful for other purposes (Taylor, 1985; Lampe, 1986):

  1. 1.

    Facilitating endotracheal intubation, laryngoscopy, bronchoscopy, and esophagoscopy;

  2. 2.

    Various orthopedic procedures, e.g., correcting dislocations and aligning of fractures; and

  3. 3.

    Preventing dislocations and fractures during electroconvulsive shock therapy for affective disorders.
