Abstract

The techniques for human in vitro fertilization (IVF) by Edwards and Steptoe in the 1970s (1, 2) and Wood and colleagues in the late 1970s and early 1980s (3–5) have been developed into a broad spectrum of treatment strategies that are now known as the new reproductive technologies for assisted human conception. The complex nature of the treatment options that now exist is often not appreciated, and there is frequently a misunderstanding of the interrelationships between the various options and their application. This chapter identifies the treatment options and their relationships to one another.
