Abstract
In the course of comfortable and fluid interactions, our attention is rarely directed to the nonverbal behaviors underlying the smooth give and take in conversation. Nevertheless, there are subtle yet important behavioral patterns related to continuity and sequencing in interaction. The disruption of these patterns often produces noticeable discomfort and increased self-consciousness. The purpose of the present chapter will be to discuss and analyze the behavioral patterns related to the regulation of interaction. The primary emphasis will be on direct verbal encounters, or what Goffman (1963) calls focused interactions.
