Abstract
In this chapter physical systems which require only one state variable are examined; it is further assumed that the state equations are linear so that Laplace transforms, as discussed in Appendix B, can be used with benefit. A brief discussion of some basic systems notions for such state models is first given. Then these systems concepts are used to develop and analyze state models for several particular physical processes.
