Abstract

It is widely believed that the hydrophobicity of the heme pocket and the protection against dimerization of oxymyoglobin stabilizes the hemeiron( II) from oxidation. However, a number of model compounds designed on the basis of this consideration have not always been stable. Recently, some investigators1–4have pointed out the significance of the polar interactions at the distal side. In this presentation, the discussion will be focused on the titled mechanisms and will be shown that these are thoroughly elucidated by the hypothesis that has been proposed by the author5.
