Abstract

Nocturnal enuresis is conventionally defined as the persistent and involuntary passing of urine during sleep beyond about 4 years of age and in the absence of demonstrable urologic or neurologic pathology. In establishing the diagnosis of functional enuresis it is crucial to distinguish between nocturnal enuresis in the absence of other micturitional difficulties and nocturnal enuresis accompanied by diurnal frequency and urgency. Also noteworthy is the distinction between primary (never continent) and secondary (return to bedwetting after a period of continence) enuresis.
