Abstract

The status of order parameters in lattice gauge theories with matter fields is reviewed, together with several related problems. Then the flux correlations order parameter is discussed in detail. An analysis of its finite distance behaviour leads to the definition of a characteristic length scale rD. This is possible both at zero and at finite temperature. It is argued that rD is the screening length for dynamical charge fluctuations (Debye screening). In general, the length defined from the exponential decay of Polyakov loop correlations is different from rD.
