Abstract
The origin of oxidations with peroxides induced by metal compounds can be traced back to 1894, when H. J. H. Fenton reported the oxidation of tartaric acid with hydrogen peroxide catalyzed by ferrous salt.1 Thence a mixture of H2O2-Fe2+ has been called the Fenton reagent. Afterwards, Morrell and Crafts2 studied the oxidation of a series of hydroxyl compounds including sugars, but the complexity of oxidation products limited the general use of this reagent.
