Abstract
The clinical efficacy of the new antidepressant Pirlindole is comparable to Amitriptyline, Imipramine, Desipramine, and Maprotiline (Heinrich 1983), but the mechanism of action is different. In addition to the inhibition of norepinephrine and serotonin reuptake (Mashkovskij et al. 1975), Pirlindole is a specific and reversible inhibitor of the monoamine oxidase A (MAO-A). Therefore an increase of a pressor response induced by food derived pressor amines in patients under Pirlindole treatment is possible. Because of the strong correlation between the changes in the tyramine pressor test and the inhibition of MAO-activity (Pettinger et al. 1968), the tyramine pressor response was tested in volunteers after acute and subchronic application of Pirlindole.
