Abstract
This chapter provides a description along with a personal perspective on some aspects of automobile manufacturing at Ford Motor Company. In particular, the chapter begins with a brief overview of the scope of Ford’s North American manufacturing operations. After this overview, certain aspects of vehicle assembly and stamping operations are discussed in somewhat greater detail. The next subject to be covered is scheduling of manufacturing operations, both at the level of the assembly plant (first tier) and at the stamping plant as representative of a second tier supplier. With this material as background, new operating strategies in manufacturing such as computer integrated manufacturing (CIM), just-in-time (JIT), flexible machining, and statistical process control (SPC) will be considered from the perspective of change required for implementation. Finally, the chapter will conclude with a short summary. Throughout this overview, the focus will be on opportunities and/or requirements for change in order to achieve greater productivity and improved product quality.
