The Role of Polarons in Radiationless Processes

  • Chapter
Radiationless Processes

Abstract

The theory of electron-phonon interactions in semiconductors is reviewed. The effective Hamiltonian is derived for phonons with large wavelengths in three cases: the deformation-potential interaction with acoustic phonons, the Fröhlich polar interaction with longitudinal-optical phonons and the piezoelectric coupling with acoustic phonons. Some possible applications of polaron theory to radiationless processes are briefly discussed.
