Current Aspects of the Solution Chemistry of Arylnitrenes

  • Chapter
Reactive Intermediates

Abstract

Nitrenes (RN) are electroneutral electron-deficient monovalent nitrogen species. The parent of this series of intermediates is nitrene (imidogen according to Chemical Abstracts nomenclature) (NH) itself, derivatives of which are for-mulated by replacing hydrogen by various functionalities. Thus replacement of hydrogen by aryl- gives arylnitrenes. The nitrogen atom in nitrenes contains six electrons in its valence shell, and these species may exist either in the singlet state (1) (an electrophile) or in the triplet state (2) (a diradical). This review seeks to highlight recent important developments and current trends in the solution chemistry of aryl- and hetarylnitrenes from both a mechanistic and synthetic viewpoint. Some closely related transformations that do not necessarily involve nitrenes will be discussed for comparative purposes.
