Abstract
Energy level assignments of lanthanides in crystals can be made via a combination of absorption and emission spectra at low temperatures with appropriate Zeeman spectra (1,2), provided the appropriate absorption bands are narrow. In systems with relatively broad absorption bands, the information supplied by Zeeman spectroscopy can be obtained via magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) (3–5). This technique leads to the determination of molar ellipticities, [θ]M, which relate to the difference between the absorption coefficients of l.c.p and r.c.p light in the presence of a longitudinal magnetic field.
