Abstract
Earlier in the book we discussed the gradual emergence and acceptance over recent years of scientific investigations of alcohol problems. The behavioral alcohol research studies conducted at Patton State Hospital in California from July, 1969, through June, 1971, constituted part of the increasing attention given to the behavioral study of alcohol problems. The next several chapters describe that entire two-year research venture in some detail. In this chapter, we endeavor to illustrate how a series of seemingly diverse basic research studies influenced the course of future research, eventuating in a large-scale, broad-spectrum behavioral treatment approach—Individualized Behavior Therapy for alcoholics.
