Abstract

The classification of the pteridophytes adopted here includes about 9,000 species, 240 genera and 33 families. Other classifications have been proposed by Christensen (1938), Copeland (1947), Holttum (1949), Crabbe et al. (1975), and Pichi-Sermolli (1977). All of these differ in their systematic arrangement, especially among the ferns previously placed in the Polypodiaceae (families 14–22 of this treatment). Many of the differences are due to the recognition of a taxon at a different rank, as genus, subgenus or section. Others are due to problems of convergent evolution, which can lead to a different alignment of a group. As new data is directed towards solving these problems, a greater consistency in systems of classification can be expected. The recognition of small families, such as Danaeaceae, Mohriaceae and Onocleaceae, and of small genera such as Osmundopteris, Cheiropleuria and Ormopteris provides homogeneous groups, but does not express their relationships to allied taxa. Recognition of larger families and genera results in more heterogeneous taxa, which permits diversity to be recognized in infrafamilial and infrageneric ranks.
