2. Maintenance of Certification

Abstract

Maintenance of Certification (MOC) is now required of all newly certified and recertified surgeons. It is a program of continuous professional development that includes continuing education, self-assessment, and evaluation of performance in practice. MOC is divided into four components: Part 1 Professional Standing, Part 2 Lifelong Learning and Self-Assessment, Part 3 Cognitive Expertise, and Part 4 Evaluation of Performance in Practice. Documentation must be provided to the American Board of Surgery in 3-year cycles, and will include proof of CME, CME self-assessment, professional testimonials, and documentation of participation in a database. The ABS Recertification Examination is now required for Part 3, and, as before, must be taken once every 10 years to fulfill MOC requirements and thus allow for continuing ABS certification.
