Abstract
The flexible bronchoscope has evolved over 40 years from an optical device that allowed one person to visualize the upper airway with questionable imaging to an instrument which now can be viewed by many, through high-resolution video monitors on a microscopic level to see the underlying capillaries beneath the surface and even deeper into the surrounding anatomy to allow real-time access to assist in the diagnosis of mediastinal disease. This technology of course comes with a price, and the cost of damage to these delicate tools can be overwhelming to a department’s repair budget. Fortunately, there are measures that can be implemented to prevent significant damage and decisions to be made when damage occurs to control expenses.
