Promotion of Cognitive Health Through Prevention: The Case of Sports Concussion

Abstract

Sports-related concussions are frequent injuries occurring in most contact and collision sports across all ages and all levels of play. Once thought of as a comical injury that was “part of the game,” it is now understood that concussions are brain injuries that can have permanent and at times devastating neurocognitive consequences if not evaluated and managed appropriately. This chapter reviews the definition of concussion, mechanism of injury, the pathophysiology underlying the injury, epidemiology, and the clinical management of players who have sustained a concussion. The focus then turns to prevention of the injury and, more importantly, the prevention of deleterious consequences from improper management. Various prevention strategies are discussed ranging from education to legislative reform.
