Endovascular Therapies for Gastrointestinal (GI) Bleeding

Abstract

Gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding is a common gastrointestinal disorder with over 300,000 hospital admissions per year. There is significant mortality associated with acute gastrointestinal bleeding with rates between 10 % and up to 40 % if there is associated hemodynamic instability. GI bleeding can be categorized into either upper (UGIB) or lower GI bleeding (LGIB). UGIB is significantly more common, accounts for approximately 75 % of all GI bleeds, and is defined as occurring proximal to the ligament of Treitz.
