Abstract

Consumption of Western diet and sedentary lifestyles (lack of physical activity) may contribute to the pathogenesis of MetS, stroke, AD, and depression. Positive energy balance primarily results in storage of fat as triglyceride in adipose tissue. This process predisposes overnourished individuals to weight gain, insulin resistance, and ultimately the onset of MetS, which is a risk factor for stroke, AD, and depression. There are striking commonalities among MetS, stroke, AD, and depression. These commonalities include impaired glucose and energy metabolism, elevated AGEs and ROS, sustained expression of proinflammatory cytokines, and impairment in long-term contextual and spatial memory. Studies on the relationship among MetS, stroke, AD, and depression are still in infancy and more population-based studies are needed in the elderly in order to accurately diagnose and estimate the risk of developing MetS-mediated stroke, AD, and depression.
